Google’s strategy began with plastic because it constituted a large share of device mass and benefited from a relatively mature recycling ecosystem. Rather than attempting a wholesale overhaul, the sustainability team worked with designers and materials engineers to validate recycled content in a single component, then expanded incrementally once performance and reliability were proven. Stuber noted that these transitions often require many years — sometimes a decade — before appearing in shipping products, underscoring the need for early engagement with development roadmaps and a holistic view of material science, supply availability and manufacturing tolerances.
