Industrial-scale conversion of food waste into renewable natural gas is accelerating across the United States as a convergence of regulatory mandates, rising landfill costs, and corporate climate commitments makes the economics work. Divert, a food-waste processor founded in 2007, recently brought its 14th facility online in Turlock, California, where it processed 2.5 million pounds of unsold food from seven United States Cold Storage warehouses in just 15 months — generating enough pipeline-quality gas to heat roughly 3,000 homes for a year while avoiding more than 140,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The model works because hauling fees to anaerobic digestion facilities now undercut landfill tipping fees in many markets, giving generators a direct cost incentive to divert organics.

California’s SB 1383, which requires a 75 percent reduction in organic waste disposal by 2025, has been a primary catalyst, but similar mandates in states including Vermont, Massachusetts, and Washington are creating a national patchwork that favors digestion over disposal. At the same time, large retailers and logistics operators face mounting pressure to quantify and reduce Scope 3 emissions; sending food waste to a facility that captures methane for pipeline injection and produces digestate for fertilizer addresses both the upstream waste footprint and the downstream fossil-fuel displacement in a single transaction.
