Italian clean energy developer Limes Renewable Energy has reached the ready-to-build milestone for its 200MW/1GWh Huañil battery energy storage project in Chile, advancing one of Latin America’s largest standalone storage assets toward construction. The five-hour duration system signals a maturing Chilean market where longer-duration storage is becoming essential to manage rising renewable penetration and provide grid stability services beyond short-term frequency response.

Chile already leads Latin America in battery storage deployments, driven by a power system that routinely curtails solar and wind generation in the north while facing evening peak demand in the central grid. Reaching ready-to-build status means Limes has secured land rights, environmental permits, grid connection approvals, and offtake arrangements — a de-risking sequence that typically precedes financial close within months. For international investors tracking the region, the milestone offers a tangible signal that Chile’s regulatory framework, including its capacity remuneration mechanisms and ancillary service markets, can support merchant or hybrid revenue models for multi-hour storage.

Limes Renewable Energy, backed by private equity and infrastructure capital, has built a pipeline exceeding 2GW across solar, wind, and storage in Chile.
