Electra, a Brooklyn-based startup, has introduced an induction stove with an integrated 5-kilowatt-hour battery that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet, eliminating the need for costly electrical panel upgrades while enabling the appliance to serve as distributed grid storage. The unit charges during periods of abundant solar generation and discharges during peak demand, turning a kitchen appliance into a grid asset that can also power several meals during a blackout.
The innovation addresses a persistent barrier to residential electrification: the high cost and logistical friction of upgrading older homes to 240-volt service. While a conventional induction range may cost less upfront, the required panel upgrades, rewiring, and electrician fees can push the total installed cost well above Electra’s $3,999 price tag. By sidestepping that infrastructure hurdle, the stove becomes viable for renters, multifamily buildings, and homeowners who cannot afford or are not permitted to modify their electrical systems.
Grid operators and utilities gain a new class of behind-the-meter resources that can be aggregated for demand response and ancillary services. Electra’s software partners manage charging and discharging schedules to align with wholesale market signals, effectively turning each stove into a small-scale virtual power plant. Early usage data suggests frequent cooks consume only about 20 percent of the battery’s capacity daily, a pattern that supports long cycle life for the lithium iron phosphate chemistry and leaves ample headroom for grid services.
Pilot deployments in Burbank, California, and an 80-unit Bronx apartment building will test the model at scale and reveal whether the economics hold across diverse rate structures and tenant behaviors. With federal electrification rebates lapsed but state and utility incentives still active in many markets, the stove’s value proposition hinges on avoided wiring costs and stackable grid revenues. If the hardware proves reliable and the software integration seamless, battery-backed appliances could become a standard feature of the decarbonizing home.
