Heron Power is investing more than $100 million to convert a 286,000-square-foot California warehouse into a factory capable of producing 10,000 solid-state transformers per year, a volume the company says represents 40-plus gigawatts of medium-voltage capacity and the largest single-year transformer buildout in over two decades. Mass production is scheduled to begin late next year, and Chief Executive Drew Baglino reports strong early interest from electric utilities and data-center developers racing to secure grid equipment amid unprecedented demand.

The move signals a potential inflection point for solid-state transformer technology, which replaces the heavy iron cores and oil baths of conventional units with power-electronics-based architectures that are smaller, lighter, and inherently controllable. For utilities, that translates to faster deployment, reduced substation footprints, and the ability to manage voltage and power quality dynamically — capabilities that grow more valuable as inverter-based resources proliferate. For data-center operators, the compact form factor and rapid ramp rates align with the compressed timelines and dense power requirements of AI-driven campuses.

Transformer supply chains have been a critical bottleneck across North America, with lead times for large power transformers stretching past two years and prices doubling since 2020. Heron’s medium-voltage focus — typically 4 kV to 69 kV — targets the distribution and interconnection tier where data centers, solar-plus-storage plants, and industrial electrification projects connect. If the company can deliver at the stated scale, it would represent a meaningful new domestic source at a time when the U.S. grid is adding gigawatts of new load and generation annually.

Baglino, a former Tesla energy executive, has assembled a team steeped in high-volume power-electronics manufacturing, and the company’s choice of a brownfield warehouse conversion over greenfield construction reflects a capital-efficient approach to rapid scale-up. The broader market will be watching whether solid-state transformers can achieve the reliability track record and cost parity that utilities require for widespread adoption.
