Climate-driven extreme weather — catastrophic floods, sustained heat waves exceeding 110 degrees, wildfires, and a Colorado River running dry across seven states and Mexico — has shifted from future projection to daily reality, disrupting power grids, water supplies, food systems, and political discourse across North America while utilities and policymakers remain dangerously unprepared for the scale and frequency of these compounding crises.

The grid impacts are immediate and measurable. Hundreds of thousands of customers have lost power for hours or days during heat events that the CDC links to more than 2,300 deaths in 2023 alone, a figure experts consider a significant undercount. When air conditioning becomes a survival necessity rather than a comfort, the reliability calculus for generation and distribution infrastructure fundamentally changes.
