Energy analyst Germán has revisited his 2023 warning that hasty energy transition decisions and neglect of firm power capacity would collide with physical reality, arguing that the industrial-scale arrival of artificial intelligence has now made that collision imminent and the prospect of $200-per-barrel oil a tangible risk rather than a theoretical scenario. The core issue is not a failure of renewable or nuclear technologies, but the inability of political timelines to override the physics of electricity systems that require continuous, fuel-secure generation — a constraint that surging data-center demand has exposed with unforgiving clarity.

When Germán joined Energy Central’s Network of Experts in May 2023, he identified “trends and hasty decisions” as his primary concern, emphasizing that electricity systems still demand firm, reliable power and secure fuel supply regardless of technological aspirations. Three years later, the explosive growth of AI infrastructure has turned that observation from elementary to urgent: hyperscale data centers require 24/7 power at gigawatt scale, and grids already strained by electrification mandates and intermittent generation have no margin to absorb this new baseload without dispatchable resources.

The $200 barrel thesis rests on a chain of causality that the industry has repeatedly underestimated: policy-driven retirement of firm capacity meets inflexible demand growth, forcing reliance on marginal gas and oil-fired generation, which in turn tightens global fuel markets to breaking point. Europe’s 2022 energy crisis offered a preview; the AI demand wave now arriving is larger, less flexible, and coincident with declining spare capacity in both generation and refining. Physics, as Germán notes, does not negotiate — and price becomes the only remaining rationing mechanism when supply cannot respond.

The uncomfortable value of a dated warning is precisely that it was issued before the crisis, complete with its original uncertainties. Retrospective certainty is cheap; prospective clarity amid ambiguity is what enables prevention. Whether the $200 threshold materializes depends less on geological limits than on whether planners now acknowledge that firm power and fuel security are not optional accessories to the transition but its prerequisites.
