Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a halt to approvals for new data center projects until the Public Utility Commission and ERCOT complete a comprehensive audit that will require developers to disclose tax incentives, on-site generation plans, and water usage details — a move that effectively freezes the state’s booming data center pipeline while regulators assess whether the grid can absorb nearly 474 gigawatts of pending interconnection requests, almost all from data centers and more than five times ERCOT’s record peak demand.
