Seabird populations have collapsed by 70% since 1950, leaving them with no resilience against El Niño-driven food shortages and intensifying marine heat waves that are now causing mass starvation events across the Pacific. The current die-off in Ecuador — where emaciated carcasses of endangered waved albatrosses, boobies, and shearwaters litter beaches — illustrates how climate change has stripped these species of the buffer they once had to survive natural ocean cycles. This ecological collapse traces directly to fossil fuel emissions that the industry knew would warm the oceans half a century ago.

During El Niño events, the normal upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water weakens, collapsing the food chain from phytoplankton to sardines and anchovies. Larger fish can dive deeper or migrate, but seabirds are tethered to surface waters and breeding colonies. When the 2015–16 marine heat wave struck the North Pacific, roughly four million common murres — half of Alaska’s population — starved to death. A similar heat wave off California this spring triggered another spike in dead brown pelicans, loons, and grebes.

Climate stress compounds a litany of direct human pressures. Coastal development has erased nesting habitat. Invasive rats and snakes devour eggs. Longline hooks, plastic ingestion, and drowning in fishing nets kill adults by the millions. These threats drove the 70% decline before ocean warming accelerated; now they ensure that every El Niño or heat wave becomes a potential extinction event for the most vulnerable species.

The energy sector cannot view this as a distant conservation issue. Seabirds are the canary in the coal mine — literally, given that coal combustion initiated the carbon buildup now cooking their foraging grounds. Internal documents confirm fossil fuel companies anticipated this trajectory decades ago. As the industry navigates the transition, the fate of these birds measures the speed and sincerity of decarbonization: every fraction of a degree of avoided warming preserves a sliver of the resilience these populations have lost.
