China’s energy storage market doubled in 2025 for the second consecutive year, marking a sustained exponential growth trajectory that signals the sector has moved decisively from policy-driven pilot projects to commercial scale. The simultaneous emergence of a price inflection point — where falling battery costs intersect with rising electricity arbitrage value — fundamentally alters project economics and positions China as the global benchmark for storage deployment velocity.

The doubling reflects a confluence of structural drivers rather than a single policy stimulus. Provincial mandates requiring storage co-location with new wind and solar capacity have created a guaranteed demand floor, while power market reforms in regions such as Guangdong and Shandong have enabled merchant revenue streams through peak-shaving arbitrage and ancillary services. Domestic manufacturers, led by CATL and BYD, have leveraged gigafactory-scale production to push lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell prices below ¥0.6/Wh, a threshold that makes two-hour storage projects viable without subsidies in most industrial tariff zones.

That price inflection point is the more consequential development. When levelized cost of storage drops below the spread between peak and off-peak industrial tariffs, the investment case shifts from compliance-driven to profit-driven. Early data from Jiangsu and Zhejiang suggest internal rates of return on merchant storage assets now exceed 12% without capacity payments — a figure that would have been unthinkable eighteen months ago. This economic crossover accelerates the feedback loop: more deployments drive further manufacturing scale, which pushes costs lower, which unlocks new use cases from grid-forming inverters to long-duration applications.

Western developers and utilities are increasingly procuring Chinese integrated storage blocks for projects in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, importing not just hardware but the engineering playbooks refined across hundreds of Chinese installations.
