Construction has officially begun on the 200MW/400MWh Steel River East battery energy storage system in Newcastle, New South Wales, marking the first project delivery for PLUS Grid Storage. The facility will provide critical firming capacity for the NSW grid as the state accelerates its transition away from coal-fired generation, with the first of four major coal plants — Eraring — scheduled to close in 2025.

PLUS Grid Storage was established as a joint venture between Ausgrid, Australia’s largest electricity distributor, and the infrastructure investment firm EQT Active Core Infrastructure. The partnership targets the development of large-scale storage assets connected directly to Ausgrid’s distribution network, a model that bypasses transmission bottlenecks and positions storage closer to load centres. Steel River East is the first of several projects in the pipeline, with the joint venture aiming to deploy up to 1GW of storage capacity across the network.

The Steel River site carries symbolic and strategic weight. Once home to heavy steel manufacturing, the precinct is being repurposed as an energy hub, leveraging existing high-voltage grid connections and industrial-zoned land. Locating a 400MWh battery here demonstrates how brownfield industrial sites can be converted into clean energy infrastructure, reducing development risk and community friction. The project also aligns with the NSW Government’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, which identifies the Hunter-Central Coast region as a Renewable Energy Zone.

For the National Electricity Market, the timing is significant. With AEMO forecasting reliability gaps as coal units retire, distribution-connected batteries like Steel River East can provide fast frequency response, voltage support, and peak capacity without requiring new transmission build. The project’s two-hour duration suits intra-day shifting of rooftop solar — now exceeding 4GW on Ausgrid’s network — while also offering contingency reserves during generator outages. As the first asset from a utility-backed storage platform, it sets a precedent for network-led storage deployment that other DNSPs are watching closely.
