Serentica Renewables has commissioned the first phase of a 1GWh battery energy storage system in Rajasthan, India, marking a significant step toward delivering round-the-clock renewable energy at commercial scale in one of the country’s most solar-rich states. The deployment moves battery storage beyond pilot projects into utility-scale infrastructure designed to firm variable solar generation for industrial offtakers. This milestone signals that India’s storage rollout is accelerating faster than many capacity-expansion models have assumed.

The project addresses a structural bottleneck in India’s clean energy transition: the mismatch between peak solar output and evening demand. Rajasthan hosts over 20GW of installed solar capacity, yet without storage, that generation cannot reliably serve the night-time loads of energy-intensive industries. Serentica’s model — pairing large-scale renewables with long-duration storage to sell firm power directly to corporate buyers — bypasses the financial and operational risks that have slowed storage adoption in regulated utility markets.

Serentica, backed by KKR, has positioned itself as a dedicated supplier of round-the-clock renewable power to hard-to-abate sectors such as cement, steel, and chemicals. The Rajasthan BESS anchors a broader portfolio targeting 4GW of renewable capacity with storage across multiple states. By securing long-term power purchase agreements with industrial consumers, the company de-risks storage investment without relying on ancillary service markets that remain underdeveloped in India.

Grid operators will watch the project’s performance closely. A 1GWh system operating at high cycle frequency in Rajasthan’s extreme temperatures will generate real-world data on degradation, round-trip efficiency, and the economics of multi-hour shifting — data that remains scarce for lithium-ion deployments at this scale in South Asia. Success here could unlock financing for the next wave of multi-gigawatt-hour tenders already in the pipeline under India’s national energy storage mission.
