Detroit-based startup Grounded EVs is expanding from electric recreational vehicles into the Class 3 commercial truck segment, targeting the 14,000–26,000 GVWR weight class that Tesla has not addressed with its Semi or Cybertruck platforms. This move places Grounded among a growing cohort of U.S. startups racing to electrify medium-duty fleets — delivery vans, box trucks, and vocational chassis — where duty cycles and depot charging make the economics of electrification most compelling today.
The Class 3 category sits in a strategic sweet spot: heavy enough to handle serious payloads but light enough to operate without a commercial driver’s license in most jurisdictions. Fleet operators in last-mile logistics, municipal services, and regional distribution have been waiting for viable electric options that fit existing routes and charging infrastructure. Legacy OEMs have been slow to scale purpose-built models, leaving a vacuum that startups like Grounded, Harbinger, and Thor are now rushing to fill with clean-sheet designs optimized for electric architecture rather than retrofitted diesel platforms.
Grounded’s pivot from RVs to work trucks reflects a broader recalibration in the EV startup ecosystem. The recreational market proved capital-intensive and cyclical, while commercial fleets offer predictable, high-utilization demand and bulk procurement potential. Investors are increasingly directing capital toward B2B electrification plays with clearer paths to revenue, and the Inflation Reduction Act’s commercial vehicle tax credits — up to $40,000 per qualifying vehicle — further sharpen the total-cost-of-ownership case for fleet buyers evaluating their first electric purchases.
Tesla’s absence from this segment is less an oversight than a strategic choice; the Semi targets Class 8 long-haul, and the Cybertruck straddles light-duty. But the middle of the market — where most urban and regional freight moves — remains wide open. As more purpose-built Class 3–6 EVs reach production, the bottleneck will shift from vehicle availability to charging infrastructure and grid integration at scale. The startups that solve the full ecosystem challenge, not just the vehicle, will define the next decade of commercial fleet electrification.
