DeltaX, a battery manufacturer focused on renewable energy integration, has announced a new production facility in Georgia, underscoring the rapid scaling of domestic energy storage manufacturing in the United States. The investment arrives as demand for grid-scale storage surges, driven by renewable deployment and growing reliability concerns. Yet the industry faces a critical bottleneck: roughly 750 gigawatts of storage projects remain trapped in interconnection queues nationwide, unable to connect to the grid despite ready hardware and capital.
The interconnection backlog has become the single largest constraint on the U.S. clean energy transition. While factory announcements like DeltaX’s demonstrate that supply chains can respond quickly to policy signals such as the Inflation Reduction Act’s manufacturing credits, the transmission planning and study processes governed by regional grid operators and FERC have not kept pace. Projects routinely wait three to five years for interconnection agreements, creating a widening gap between available storage capacity and operational assets.
This disconnect has direct consequences for grid reliability. Storage is uniquely positioned to provide fast frequency response, peak shaving, and multi-hour shifting — services that become more valuable as thermal plants retire and variable renewables expand. When gigawatts of ready-to-deploy storage sit in queues, system operators lose a critical tool for managing congestion and avoiding outages during extreme weather events. The queue logjam also distorts market signals, discouraging new development in constrained zones and inflating costs for projects that do clear the process.
Reform efforts are underway, including FERC Order 2023’s cluster study reforms and regional initiatives to improve queue management, but implementation timelines stretch years. Meanwhile, manufacturers continue to expand capacity, betting that policy and grid architecture will eventually align. The DeltaX factory represents a vote of confidence in that alignment — but until interconnection timelines shrink from years to months, each new production line adds to a growing inventory of stranded potential.
